A Garmin GNS 430W simulator in the browser, before the aircraft

Practise the button pushing and the procedures at home, with a GFC 500 autopilot, G5 displays and New Zealand and US navigation data, and soon anywhere in the world through a Navigraph subscription, so your aircraft time goes on flying. Built page for page from the Garmin manuals for MyFlight's Archer, and it flies the Seneca too.

Who uses it

Learn the unit cold, then go flying

The 430W has a lot of knobs and a lot of pages. Learning them in the aeroplane at $300 an hour is the expensive way. Garmin's own 430 trainer is 2007 Windows software and hard to get running now; this one runs in any browser with current New Zealand and US databases, and soon anywhere in the world through a Navigraph subscription.

The student

Power it up, load the Ardmore RNP, fly it to minima with the autopilot, then do it again. The Help tab walks through each task with screenshots, and point-and-click help explains any key or field.

The instructor

Save a scenario that lines the aircraft up for a procedure, set the failures you want, and send students home to fly it. When a student sends feedback, the unit's state travels with it.

The IFR candidate

Every New Zealand SID, STAR and approach from the AIP plates, and the FAA's US procedures, with the AIRAC data the real unit flies, holds, arcs and procedure turns included. Fly the whole route, not a cut-down one. Soon, anywhere in the world through a Navigraph subscription.

The flight school

On Altivy LMS, switch the trainer on for your organisation and every member opens it from the LMS menu, already signed in, at no charge per student.

The unit

The GNS 430W, page for page

Power-up and the self-test, COM and VLOC tuning with the 30-second revert, the NAV, WPT, AUX and NRST groups, the flight plan and the catalogue, Direct-To, procedures, OBS and SUSP, the messages: built from the Garmin 400W Series Pilot's Guide. Anything the trainer does not model says so on the page it would appear on. Nothing is faked.

  • Phase-of-flight CDI scaling, ENR, TERM, APR and the LPV glidepath.
  • Vectors-to-final, holds, DME arcs and the missed approach, sequenced as the unit does it.
  • An Ask tab that answers from the Garmin and Aspen manuals and knows what the unit is doing right now.

Autopilot and instruments

GFC 500 and G5 displays

The GMC 507 controller runs its preflight test, engages in ROL and PIT, flies HDG, NAV, APR with glidepath or glideslope capture, ALT, VS, IAS and the altitude pre-select, drops a lost source to ROL with the amber flash, and holds MAXSPD and MINSPD. The G5 shows the status box, the attitude and the HSI; pick the Aspen EFD1000 instead if that is what you fly.

  • Bearing pointers to the tuned VOR and the GPS waypoint.
  • Mode keys light as they do on the real controller, and a refused AP press says why.
  • Type a heading, altitude or course in the strip above the controller and the autopilot flies it.

Scenarios

Start anywhere, break anything

Start parked, lined up or airborne at any New Zealand aerodrome, with the wind you want. Speed the clock up for the cruise, slow it down for the approach. Fail the GPS, the VOR or the autopilot and see what the unit and the instruments do about it. Instructors save scenarios for the whole school.

  • The plate beside the unit, with a map of the plan and the aeroplane on it.
  • Works on an iPad side by side with the chart; installs as an app and keeps your plates offline.
  • Training only. It is not a navigation tool and never for use in flight.

Questions

Before you sign up

Is it the real GNS 430W?
It is a model of the 430W built from Garmin's Pilot's Guide, page for page, with New Zealand and US navigation data. Anything not modelled says so where it would appear.
Do I need a card to start?
No. Create an account and the trial starts at once. If you subscribe during the trial you are not charged until it ends.
Can I cancel?
Any time, from your account page. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.
I use Altivy LMS
Open the trainer from the LMS menu and you are signed in. If your organisation has trainer access, there is nothing to pay.
Which devices?
Any modern browser. On an iPad it sits beside the plate; on a phone the unit is above the tabs. Install it from the browser menu and the plates you have opened stay available offline.
Is it for navigation?
TRAINING ONLY. Never for flight planning or in flight. The data in it is for practice and may differ from the current AIP.
Is it a Garmin product?
No. It is an independent trainer from MyFlight and Altivy, not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by Garmin. Garmin's names are used only to say which equipment is modelled.
